Which GPS tracker to choose for a car, truck or heavy equipment

A Teltonika tracker model is chosen by task, not price: seeing the vehicle on a map, counting fuel, reading CAN or driving in the EU. For a car or van, the compact FMB920 is enough; fuel control needs the FMB125; heavy equipment needs the FMB140 with CAN. Below is a quick cheat sheet with kit prices.

How to read the names: FMB and FMC

The letter after FM indicates the connectivity: FMB models work on 2G, FMC models on 4G. For example, the FMC125 is the 4G version of the FMB125 with the same fuel level sensor capabilities.

Next in the name comes the model: 920 — compact, 125 — with sensor interfaces, 140 — with built-in CAN, 650 — for tractor units with a tachograph.

Four questions before choosing a tracker

To avoid overpaying or buying a model that can't handle the task, answer four questions:

  • Do you need to count fuel in litres and catch drains? Then you need a fuel level sensor and a tracker with inputs for it — FMB125 or FMC125.
  • Do you need engine hours, consumption and RPM from the on-board bus? Then you need CAN — FMB140.
  • Does the vehicle travel in the EU? Then choose a 4G FMC model.
  • Does the vehicle have a tachograph that needs remote download? Then FMC650.

Which model to choose for the task

Quick selection by vehicle type:

  • FMB920 — a compact tracker for cars and LCVs, easy to conceal during installation. Map, routes, mileage, areas. “GPS Start” kit with installation — 2,600 UAH.
  • FMB125 — for trucks, buses and generators that need a fuel level sensor: it has RS232/RS485 interfaces. Kit with a fuel level sensor — 6,050 UAH, with installation and calibration — 9,839 UAH.
  • FMB140 — with built-in CAN reading: fuel consumption and level, engine hours. For heavy equipment, agriculture and trucks. “CAN and engine hours” kit (FMB140 LV-CAN with installation) — 6,349 UAH, agro kit (FMB140 ALL-CAN with EYE Sensor) — 11,999 UAH.
  • FMC125 — the 4G version of FMB125 for trucks on Ukraine–EU routes. “UA–EU Carrier” kit with a fuel sensor — 8,599 UAH, installation and calibration — from 5,748 UAH, SENT connection — 500 UAH.
  • FMC650 — for tractor units with a tachograph: CAN, a fuel level sensor and remote download of tachograph files (DDD). Priced for the specific vehicle.

Accessories and platform: Navi.zone or Wialon

You can add the wireless EYE Sensor (Bluetooth, temperature, humidity, motion) to Teltonika trackers — 1,369 UAH, or the DualCam camera with two lenses, road- and cab-facing — 6,349 UAH. Accessories don't replace the tracker but complement it: their data goes to the same platform.

Teltonika trackers work with both Navi.zone and Wialon. Navi.zone (from 37 UAH/mo) is for the map, routes and mileage on your phone.

An FMB125 with a fuel level sensor works with Wialon (from 195 UAH/mo per unit) or with Navi.zone on the Business plan. An FMB140 with CAN needs Wialon.

So the order of choice is: task first, then tracker, then platform. If the task changes — for example, a vehicle will need a fuel level sensor — it is easier to take a tracker with the right inputs from the start than to replace it later.

Questions before you start

What fleet owners usually ask

Didn't find an answer? Message us on Viber or call +38 067 513 51 15.

What is the Teltonika FMB920 suited for?

For cars and LCVs, when you need a map, routes, mileage and areas. It doesn't support a fuel level sensor or CAN — for those, choose the FMB125 or FMB140.

Which tracker should I choose for trips to Poland?

For tractor units on EU routes — FMC125; if you need remote tachograph download — FMC650. For e-TOLL and SENT, data goes through a ZSL operator listed on etoll.gov.pl — we set up the connection.

2G or 4G — which to choose?

MonitorLand kits for Ukraine are built on 2G FMB models, and for Ukraine–EU routes on the 4G FMC125.
